Make an Egg Float

Materials

  • Cups

  • Water

  • Raw eggs

  • Testing ingredients - oil, salt, coffee and sugar

Directions

  1. Place an egg in a cup of water, It sinks to the bottom because the egg is more dense than the water.

  2. Ask kids if there is anything they can add to the water to make the egg float.

  3. Place an egg in a cup and cover it with water. One at a time, add testing ingredients (in separate cups) to see if they make the egg float

  4. Hint: Salt will do the trick.

What’s Happening?
The density of the egg is higher than the density of water, so it sinks. ... When enough salt is added to the water, the saltwater solution's density becomes higher than the egg's, so the egg floats.
