Make Plastic from Milk

thumbail image.png

Materials

  • 1 cup 2% milk

  • 4 tsp white vinegar or lemon juice

  • Bowl, spoon, strainer, paper towel

  • Molds (we love this set)

Directions

  1. Heat milk on the stove top until it just starts steaming. Remove from the heat.

  2. Add 4 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice and stir gently.

  3. The milk will begin to curdle - you’re making curds and whey.

  4. Stir gently for approximately one minute for the full reaction to finish and all the curds to form.

  5. Strain off the whey using a strainer. Let drip for a few minutes until most of the liquid has drained off. Gently smoosh the curds around in the strainer if needed.

  6. Remove the curds and place them on a few layers of paper towel. Carefully pat and squish to remove more liquid. You may need to replace the paper towel and repeat a few times. The goal is to remove as much liquid as possible.

  7. Squish curds into molds.

  8. Allow to try for 2 days.

  9. Optional: paint the final products with acrylic paints or markers.
