Layers of the Earth Play Dough

Materials

  • 3 cups flour

  • 1/2 cup salt

  • 6 tbsps cream of tartar

  • 3 tbsps vegetable oil

  • 3 cups water

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a pot, mix until all the lumps are gone.

  2. Move pot to stove & cook over low heat, stirring often. The dough should thicken in a few minutes.

  3. Once dough starts pulling away from sides, remove from heat. Cool in pot.

  4. Divide dough into six balls: two small (golf ball-sized), two medium and two large.

  5. Add several drops of food coloring into each ball. Small balls: 1 red, 1 green. Medium: 1 orange, 1 brown. Large: 1 yellow, 1 blue. Knead each ball separately to blend color.

  6. Build the layers of the Earth.

    1. Red - the solid inner core

    2. Orange - the liquid outer core

    3. Yellow - the mantle (the thickest layer)

    4. Brown - the Earth’s crust (made of rocks)

    5. Blue & Green - the oceans & Earth
